Status of my chess player’s dictionary (2023-11-06)

I have 293 entries, 446 references for a total of 46 pages. I’m currently reading Le Palamède, vol 1, 1836 (see the list of sources).

An entry means any person mentioned in the sources I read linked to chess (it may be a player, a chess problem composer, the secretary of a chess club…). For the time being, I mention some famous people having played chess games (for example the French maréchal Ney) in the text and include these person in the index, but without a specific entry in the directory.

The references are the precise source of one or more information contained in the dictionary. For example, in the entry about Denis Julien, there is the information “1858/06/24: attends the banquet for the new rooms of the New York Chess Club” with a reference to the New Orleans Sunday Delta of 11th July 1858.

I realized that I will add to the dictionary a section called Context notes giving explanations related to chess or others. For example, in 1836, several members of the French Cercle des Echecs were members of the Académie Française. What the Académie Française is will be described in a context note.

A question I encountered is whether (and how) I should indicate the gender of the players. There were very few female chess players in the 19th century, so this information could be valuable.
