The workplan to create this dictionary

My aim is to create a dictionary of 19th century chess players in which I would gather all the information I can find.

Although I’m not a professional historian, I’m trying to do a proper historical job. In particular, I’m starting my research from primary sources (newspapers, magazines, books published in the 19th century) and by keeping the reference of all information I can find.

The first phase of my project is thus to:

  • read a primary source
  • each time a person is mentioned, keep note of the information with the reference (source and page number)
  • the tool I’m using for writing my dictionary is latex. In order not to add a layer of work, I keep note of the information directly in latex

The second phase of my project will be to check or add information from secondary sources such as chessgames.com, edochess, exisiting chess dictionaries (or even general dictionaries for the most famous players), wikipedia. I’ll also list these secondary sources on this page.

During these two phases, depending on the information I find, I’ll also gather illustrations, games or compositions from the players.

The third phase of the project will be a redaction phase, where I’ll try to summarize the information for each player in a readable way (instead of just the superposition of information). I will also select the illustrations and the games at that time.
